Monthly tournament for the month of October. There were 61 players. This event doubled as a National Chess Day Tournament.

The tournament consisted of four sections: an 1800+ section (10 players), a U1800 section (28 players), a U1400 section (14 players), and a U900 section (8 players.) The event was 4 rounds of G/45;d5.

RESULTS: The winner of the 1800+ section was Logan Shafer, scoring 3.5/4. The winners of the U1800 section were Karthik Golla and Ashwath Badrinarayanan, scoring 3.5/4 The winner of the U1400 section was Timothy Lin, scoring 3.5/4 The winner of the U900 section was Bart Broks, scoring 4/4

Monthly tournament for the month of June. The club has been getting a good turnout now that we have had regularly scheduled tournaments. A newcomer to Waco tournaments from Austin came in and won the Open section.

Waco City Championship 2018

The Waco City Championship match between Champion Jason Howell and Challenger Andrew Bar-Jona.

Originally the match was going to be 4 rounds, 1 on each Tuesday and Thursday over a course of 2 weeks. After a 2-0 lead, Andrew conceded the match to Jason so it was played in 2 rounds. The time controls were G/60;d5.

RESULTS: The winner and still Waco champion was Jason Howell, scoring 2/2.

Waco City Championship Qualifier 2018

A yearly event we are resuming. This was a city championship available for any Waco or McLennan county residents to come play. The winner would challenge Jason Howell (current Waco champion) in a City Championship match. We thought it would be fun to have a Candidate's style tournament (although the qualifier was Open) rather than just a large tournament to decide the winner.

The tournament consisted of one Open section. The event was 4 rounds of G/45;d5. We ended up with 14 potential challengers.

RESULTS: The winner and challenger in the Championship match was Andrew Bar-Jona, scoring 4/4.

Waco Spring Swiss 2018

A fun event we had on Baylor's campus in the Bill Daniel Student Center. We played the tournament in the Barfield Drawing Room.

The tournament consisted of three sections, an Open section (4 players), a Reserve section for U1400 (also 10 players), as well as an Non-Rated section. The event was 3 rounds of G/45;d5.

RESULTS: The winner of the Open section was Jason Howell, scoring 3/3. The winners of the Reserve section were Walton Downs and Amjad Dabi, both scoring 2.5/3.

Simul Chess Exhibition with Jason Howell

Jason Howell played against 28 players (simultaneously) ranging from ages 7 to 71.

Daniel Guel of Waco, age 16, with an official chess rating of 1704 was the toughest for Jason. Daniel Guel is also a certified USCF tournament director.

Jason Howell was born July 28, 1974. He reached a peak chess rating of 2107. He won over 100 rated chess games including 5 TX State Amateur Championships.

RESULTS: Jason won 24 games Two players played Jason to a draw: Walton Downs and Marshall Melasky Two players defeated Jason: Daniel Guel and Matt Potts

This was a smaller event held at Lake Shore Baptist Church. There was only one section with nine players. It was a four round event with time control of G/45;d5.

Waco Summer Swiss 2017

A very nice event we had at Uncle Dan's restaurant. We had quite a good turn out including several players coming from out of town.

The tournament consisted of two sections, an Open section (16 players) and a Reserve section for U1400 (also 16 players). The event was 4 rounds of G/45;d5.

RESULTS: The winners of the Open section were Jason Howell and Nate Fewell, both scoring 3.5/4. The winners of the Reserve section were Zach Garrison and Dhruv Pathak, both scoring 3.5/4.

Waco Spring Swiss 2017

This was a smaller event held at Uncle Dan's with 14 players.

The tournament consisted of two sections, an Open section and a Reserve (U1400) section. There were eight players in the Open, and six players in the Reserve.

For this tournament we attempted to differentiate the time controls. For the Open, we had three rounds of G/60;d5 and for the Reserve, we had 5 rounds of G/30;d5.

RESULTS: The winner of the Open section was Dang Minh Nguyen, scoring 3/3. The winners of the Reserve section were Gary Lang and Logan Shaffer, both scoring 4/5.

This was the first Uncle Dan's tournament of 2017. We had quite a good turnout for this event with 28 players.
